The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is an agency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Border patrol employment is one of the most challenging and rewarding careers in our country. Border Patrol Agents play an integral role in keeping our country safe from potential terrorist attacks and securing our borders.
Job Openings
The CPB is currently taking applications for border patrol employment for sectors in the southwest regions of the United States. At present, the most active sectors are between Mexico and the United States. There are several requirements candidates must pass in order to qualify for available job openings.
Job Requirements
Border patrol employment requires candidates to have either experience, four years of post high school education leading to a bachelor’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree. Experience and education may be combined to meet entry-level requirements. Additional requirements for border patrol employment includes U.S. citizenship status, a background check, security clearance, a valid state driver’s license, firearm proficiency, completion of the Border Patrol Academy, maximum of forty years of age, and no domestic violence. Border Patrol candidates also need to complete additional screenings that include a written exam, interview, a Spanish proficiency exam, two physical fitness tests, a medical examination, and drug testing.
Job Availability
The CBP currently employees approximately 58,000 people worldwide. Over 20,000 people are employed as Border Patrol Agents. They are commissioned with the job of patrolling 8000-miles of land and coastal borders, deterring illegal immigration, reducing crime in border communities, preventing human trafficking, and seizing drugs and contraband.
Border patrol employment is on the rise in the southwest sectors. There are numerous positions currently being offered in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas. The border along the southwest region of the United States is a hotbed of activity that includes illegal entry into the United States as well as drug and weapons trafficking.
Training
Border patrol employment includes 11 weeks of extensive basic training at the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. Trainees are required to take courses that include Border Patrol Operations, Care and Use of Firearms, and Anti-Terrorism. Border patrol trainees must also pass a Spanish proficiency exam. If trainees do not pass the Spanish exam, they are required to take an additional eight-week Spanish class.
After completing the 11-week training program at the academy trainees are considered to be interns. Interns are required to begin the Field Training Program and the Post Academy Training Program at their job post. The entire training and post-training internship takes approximately 24 months to complete.
All trainees receive full pay and benefits during their 11-week training program at the Border Patrol Academy. The pay for border patrol employment ranges from $ 38,000 to $ 49,000 in the first year and includes federal benefits such as health insurance, life insurance, and retirement. Once training is completed there are a wide variety of Border Patrol Jobs available, in most areas, to those seeking them.
