This is a BASIC review of the Western Digital “My Passport” Hard Disk Drive (1TB in this case), just the drive in itself. As of this upload, the drive comes in 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB sizes. Larger soon to come. The HDD also comes with software to password-protect your data, as well as giving a graphical representation of the types of files are on the drive, and to an extent, a graphical percentage of each. To me, this is just a multimedia drive, so this added software is useless to me, as it’ll not function on multimedia players if it’s password protected. The drive works right out of the box (for PC’s at least), and is powered by the included USB cable. Best part is, it’s a solid chunk, not the old 2GB partitions their other HDD’s use. While this HDD can play multimedia files just fine, it is NOT recommended for playing games, or anything that needs to occasionally hit the drive for data. Games will appear to freeze up, as well as other apps, since the drive imediately powers down when it’s not in use. This drive is solely designed for backup purposes, so: Good for multimeidia use: YES Good for backup purposes: YES Good for games: NO Good for intense apps: NO Included Software: DEPENDS (If you take it with you, maybe, maybe not.)

It’s not designed to be used as a regular HDD, because a regular HDD will stay spinning after use, whereas after sending something to this HDD, it will spin down very quickly, and will have to ramp back up again. This is something that will crash a video editor, and slow down uploading files.

2:30 it is not intended in any way to be used as an external hard drive that i can use frequent?
SO i have a collection of at least 500gb of music? WHY would a bigger external hard drive be better or different? aren’t both hard drives? would one wear out faster?

The 500MB ones are the size of a cinder block. :)

No idea how to lock off the HDD. I use it as it is.
(Sorry for the long wait for a response, but I never got a message you replied. I just happened to have found it while deleting a potty-mouth comment someone else posted.)

It’s just a backup HDD, which is it’s sole purpose. I wouldn’t use it for playing any games, or to edit videos. Playing videos, it does work.

Some people would rather listen to a “Non-Expert” like myself, because if the average person can find flaws and ease of use in a computer product, that person can make a better decision on (not) getting the product. If it’s easy for an average guy, the more the average person will want it. An average viewpoint helps.

    No problem.
By “USB 2.0 Speed”, it’s about as fast as any USB 2.0 device for transfers, once the platters are up to speed.
    It wasn’t a sarcastic answer.

Mine is full of HD videos (and SD) in many formats. If your TV can read the specific file format, it should work, with a startup delay each time.

why no matter what you read or watch about this hard drive and others nowhere tells you what file formats they support lol can i put hd films in 720p on it dose it plug into a tv with a usb port loads of unanswered questions. and there is my 2 pennys!

It’ll work for all of the above.
The only drawback are videos. It’ll take awhile to buffer to play, and if you fast-foward, or rewind, you’ll hit that buffering again. Might also do that on music as well. Still, a good choice.
